District Court of Appeal

Also known as: DCA

The intermediate appellate courts in Florida's state court system, sitting between trial courts and the Florida Supreme Court.

Florida's state court system includes trial courts, District Courts of Appeal, and the Florida Supreme Court. The District Courts of Appeal handle the large majority of appeals from Florida trial courts. Exactly where a given case goes and what type of appellate review is available depends on the case, the order being reviewed, and the applicable jurisdictional rules.

Not every case has a path to the Florida Supreme Court. Jurisdiction there is limited to specific categories of cases, which is a separate question from whether a District Court of Appeal will hear a case. The DCAs don't always agree with each other either: FloridaOnAppeal.com's piece on Florida's intra-district precedent conflicts covers what happens when panels within the same district disagree.
